Bilateral Talks Held in China

The U.S. raised concerns, while China issued directives this week.

Meetings were held this week in China between Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and her Chinese counterpart. The deputy secretary said they had direct and frank conversations covering many topics.

The spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the U.S. must stop misrepresenting the Chinese Communist Party and stop opposing socialism in China. Also, they want the U.S. to stop allegedly interfering in China’s territorial integrity. The CCP considers both Taiwan and Hong Kong as integral Chinese territory, and perceive all calls by the West for freedom in those territories as interference in their domestic affairs.

Deputy Secretary Sherman stated she raised concerns over actions and the continued detention of U.S. and Canadian journalists, calling out the “increasingly hostile atmosphere for foreign journalists in China.”

The deputy secretary said even more pressing are the CCP’s actions in the Taiwan Strait and Hong Kong and that she remarked on these issues with her counterparts during the meeting. She stated via social media, “Open communication—even when we disagree—is critical to diplomacy. We will continue to press the PRC to respect international norms and its international obligations.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Blinken and Deputy Secretary Sherman as discussions continue with China.
  • For the administration to seek God’s guidance as they build relationships with leaders in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
  • For the people of Taiwan and Hong Kong who desire to be free from Chinese Communist Party rule.
